Almost everyone loves to visit the beach, if not stay there permanently, such is the charm of Beach life. As a result, there is a constant and continuous pressure on the beach front and the coastal areas. Therefore, care and proper management of the coastal areas must be taken on a regular basis so that the needs of the population as well as that of the area is satisfied. Otherwise, it will have a drastic effect on the ecology and also deteriorate the quality of life near and around the coastal areas. Governments and civic authorities should implement proper, comprehensive, integrated approach towards coastal management for the best results.

Managing pressure on the coastal areas is a difficult task as there are several social, physical and regulatory divisions that encompass such regions. Not only the natural soothing features that the coastal areas provide result in an increase in population, but there may be some specific activities like art show and other festivities which may result in such increase in pressure. There are also other competing economic sectors that may have an interest in such coastal regions. Governments have separate strategies for managing each of such sectors separately. Without such management control, coastal regions may experience rapid and uncontrolled development.

The competing economic sectors may include fishing and agriculture, tourism and forestry, aquaculture and manufacturing, waste disposal and marine transportation, oil, and gas extraction to real estate development. The multidiscipline and integrated approach to the management of resources incorporate the perspectives of everyone including governments and stakeholders. It looks after the interests of individuals, private sectors and even the nongovernmental organizations as well. ICM helps in looking at the opportunities in Long Beach California while at the same time lay emphasis on pressure and threats as well. ICMs has been endorsed in several international conferences across the globe from time to time.

ICM also ensures Conscious living among the residents who maintain a proper balance between the users of water and also the natural resources. This facilitates in providing environmental health for a long time and prevents any compromise being made with the productivity. There will be no rampant and unproductive depletion of the natural resources so that people can deal with the resultant pollution which may endanger public health and also deteriorate the usefulness of the area on the whole. It will also result in the proper distribution of the economic benefits of the coast as well as of the ocean.

Managing and developing the areas that are yet to be exploited can be done effectively to reduce the future impact on the coastal areas. ICM can be both at the national as well as at the subnational level, depending on the requirement and effect.  The characteristic features of such management programs are a scientifically strong foundation, proper information about the management process, effective funding mechanism and formalized mandate, consideration of social and economic data for environmental decision making, public participation and much more.  It may also involve training and develop local experts, applying research and better techniques, regular collection of useful data and strong outreach services.
